GREEN COFFEE INFORMATION
Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of the Palestina region in Huila, El Recreo farm is the legacy of four generations of coffee-growing experts. Owned by Jose Albeiro Arias Mamian, this 8-hectare farm is a vibrant mosaic of coffee plants and biodiversity. El Recreo dedicates 5 hectares to coffee production, cultivating varieties like Gesha, Pink Bourbon, Tabi, Caturra, and Castillo. The remaining land is used for corn, beans, and fruit trees, which enhance soil health and provide natural shade for the coffee plants. The farm also benefits from a natural water source, which Jose Albeiro carefully protects. This commitment to environmental conservation is reinforced by the Rainforest Alliance (RFA) certification, maintained through collaboration with Inconexus.
What truly sets El Recreo apart is its fusion of coffee-growing tradition with modern agricultural practices. Since 2015, the farm has been a pioneer in implementing the Agricultural Extension Management Core methodology, fostering knowledge-sharing and the adoption of regenerative, sustainable farming practices. In 2021, the CREA Extension Core was established as a center of innovation in coffee processing, fermentation, and drying. Collaboration with Inconexus has been instrumental in the farm’s development, not only securing RFA certification but also establishing the CREA core group, building an on-site coffee lab, and providing essential training.
Although Jose Albeiro brings years of experience, he works closely with his nephew, Maicol Arias. Despite his young age, Maicol brings fresh ideas and an innovative approach to farm operations, creating the perfect balance between tradition and modernity.
Beyond its own success, El Recreo is deeply involved in social projects, including strengthening the Coffee Mujer Association, which supports women in the coffee industry. Their commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed - in 2023, El Recreo participated in the prestigious Cup of Excellence, a remarkable achievement that highlights the exceptional quality of its coffee.
Coffee production in Huila thrives within a unique ecosystem of subtropical, humid mountain forests. With consistent rainfall, rich volcanic soil, and optimal temperatures, coffee can be cultivated at altitudes of up to 1.900 meters all year. This makes Huila one of the most competitive coffee-growing regions on the international market. Huila’s coffee is known for its complex, balanced, and delicate profile, often featuring a creamy body and notes of citrus, exotic fruits, apples, chocolate, honey and caramel.
